* REVIEW by Jude Evans ( edited) LAMBETH OPEN STUDIO 2010

…..people don’t feature at all in Lucy Duke’s work, although there is usually an implicit human presence. Lucy is exhibiting her paintings and drawings in a quiet residential street in Herne Hill. Walking into the front room, which is light and airy, I look at the pictures on display. They are light and airy too. A sense of quiet joy comes out at me from her lyrical, delicate, brightly-coloured images. She’s done some beautiful drawings of domestic scenes, like Pierre Bonnard’s complex compositions in sunlit interiors – the corner of a room, a window in the background with light streaming through, a table, some chairs, a vase of flowers, a bowl of fruit, all lovingly depicted, conveying warmth, comfort and peace. Lucy’s delight in mark making is obvious, and there’s a child-like quality in her work that I find quite compelling. It’s idiosyncratic, charming, sophisticated and naive at the same time. Lucy’s watercolour still lifes and landscapes are just as lovely as her drawings – there’s the same heightened colour and lightness of touch, and you can see the influence of the English landscape tradition, particularly Turner’s watercolour sketches. Lucy always works from direct observation, which is probably why her pictures have a vibrant and spontaneous feel, and her passion for her subjects shines through.
